Down Royal Racecourse

Down Royal Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Lisburn Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. It hosted races since the early 18th century near Lisburn in Co. Down.

History

One of the only two tracks in Northern Ireland that hosted both National Hunt and Flat racing since the early 18th century on land donated by Arthur Hill, situated near Lisburn in Co. Down, 16km south of Belfast and just off the A1, the main Belfast/Dublin road. The track surrounds the Down Royal Park golf course, an 18-hole parkland course renowned as one of the best Northern Ireland.

However, there was already recorded history in 1685 when King James II issued a Royal Charter and formed the Down Royal Corporation of Horse Breeders, and then in 1750, King George II donated £100 to run King’s Plate. Since then, Down Royal Racecourse has brought the “Sport of Kings” to generations of Northern Ireland. The most valuable race run on the track is the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, run at the Northern Ireland racing Festival in November. It is also home of the Specsavers Ulster Derby, the most valuable flat race run at the track annually.

In the early 1990s, the racecourse had major development and modernization, including completing a new Grandstand in 1993 and an additional grandstand in 2008.

Track Details

For flat races, the racecourse is right-handed, has a circuit of just under two miles, and is essentially square in shape. The course is undulating for much of the final mile, with the run-in slightly uphill. A chute for five-furlong races joins the main track after about a furlong, with races at that trip slightly on the turn until straightening just over a furlong out. Low numbers have a slight advantage at five and seven furlongs. On the other hand, races for the national hunt are run in a right-handed, undulating, square-shaped track with a circuit of one mile and seven furlongs. The narrower Hurdle Course, which also stages chases, sits outside the General Track. There are ten fences to a circuit, with four fences in the final four furlongs and less than a furlong run-in. The run-in for hurdle races is over a furlong and a half.

The facilities on the track are grandstand, Island Bar Fast Food Counters, Tote Hall, toilets, close circuit TV, member’s bar, Freeman’s bar. It offers Large Plasma CCTV screens on the suits (Moscow Flyer Suite, Beef or Salmon Suite, and Rainbow Communications Suite) enable the guests to watch all the racing action. The main grandstand also has the Dark Horse Wine Bar and Café.
