Bath Racecourse
It opened in 1728, at Lansdown.
History
The first racing at Bath occurred in 1728, then the first major meet was held in 1811, under the auspices of a local family, the Blathwayts. The racecourse was utilized as a landing field by the Royal Air Force and named RAF North Stoke during World War II. It also became the site of a criminal plot surrounding the “Spa selling plate” in 1953. In 2017, the racecourse was granted the Racehorse Owners Association Gold Standard Award and received awards for customer service from the Racing Post and Racecourse Association.
The track is a thoroughbred horse racing venue on Lansdown Hill, two miles north of Bath’s city center. It is notable for being an official Britain’s highest flat racecourse. It is currently operated by the Arena Racing Company, which also owns and manages 16 British racecourses.
Track Details
The course is about 3 1⁄4 miles (5.2 km), is a left-handed oval track of 1 mile 4 furlongs and 25 yards, with a run-in of nearly half a mile. The home straight is 4 furlongs, with a steady rise and turn. It is the highest flat racecourse in the country and has no watering facility. It is also Britain’s highest flat racecourse at 780 feet (238 m) above sea level, although National Hunt courses Hexham and Exeter are higher.
The facility offers a grandstand enclosure, a Roof Garden located on the top floor of the Langridge Stand that offers a bar and casual dining experience, a center course picnic enclosure that is open on selected fixtures only, and even a music live nights.
The Royal Crescent Restaurant in the racecourse provides a balcony overlooking the course and a three-course meal. While the Mornington Suite offers dining packages with a private balcony above the finishing line. Various international cuisine is also available at their Paddock Pavilion restaurant that overviews the parade ring.
