Hexham Racecourse
Hexham Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Hexham, Northumberland, United Kingdom. It opened in 1720 at Tyne Green.
History
It opened in 1720, originally located in Tyne Green, then in 1793, the site was relocated to Yarridge Heights. Situated at Yarridge Road High Yarridge Hexham Northumberland NE46 2JP, which is 800 feet above sea level at High Yarridge, just south of the town, featuring thoroughbred horse racing with a natural amphitheater setting.
Although it opened in 1793, its first official National Hunt meeting was staged in 1890. However, before that, it had already been closed in 1880 due to some reasons. It was being redeemed by Charles William Chipchase Henderson from 1890 to 1907, managing to re-establish the course, then eventually purchased the land and redeveloped the course.
It is also the only racecourse in Northumberland, Hexham, the most northerly National Hunt course in England, and its remote position means that no races are held in February. Based in the rolling hills of The Last Hidden Kingdom, Hexham hosts fifteen National Hunt races throughout the year, commencing its season in March and wrapping up in December.
Track Details
There are just two courses (no flat racing) throughout the racing season at Hexham – the steeplechase course and the hurdles course. They are both left-handed and measure around 1m4f in circumference. Both courses are extremely undulating, with a sharp decline on the home straight followed by a heavy ascent for the rest of the track.
The steeplechase course features ten fences, including a water jump in front of the grandstand. The hurdles course runs around the outside of the steeplechase and features six flights, with one hurdle on the home straight.
It already has a seating facility, but the current Ramshaw grandstand was only established in 1998. It has a Club Enclosure that allows racegoers access to the Ramshaw Stand and all areas. It also has a chase bar situated on the ground floor of the Ramshaw Stand, with a stone-flagged floor and stained-glass panels on the bar. Refreshments and betting facilities are available, along with extensive TV screens. In addition, it also has a Curlew room located on the first floor of the Ramshaw Stand, designed like a bar with a thick pile carpet, and can view racecourse from the comfort of your seat. This bar also offers drinks and hot snacks and facilities for betting and extensive TV screens. The last one is the Paddock Enclosure, allowing guests to access the bars, food outlets, bookmakers, betting shops, parade ring, and saddling boxes.
The track also has the Princess Anne Bar, Shire Bar, and a Bramble Tudor Café. There are also parking spaces for disabled persons situated on the tarmac area to the rear of the Owners & Trainers Bar and Henderson Suite. Accessible toilets can be found in the toilet blocks at the top of the Parade Ring and behind the Princess Anne Bar. There is a lift in the Ramshaw Stand from the ground to the second floor with accessible toilets located on the first floor.
