Omoto Racecourse
Omoto Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Greymouth, West Coast, New Zealand. It opened in 1867, at Omoto Road.
History
Omoto Racecourse was inaugurated on March 1867 hosted by the Greymouth Jockey Club. The racecourse was first mapped out in 1867 by Daniel Sheedy. Initially, the program only had a two-day meeting. However, the crowds were so much larger than expected that they extended it to the third day. Hence, its first day is a famous three-day circuit, which carries on to Reefton and finishes at Kumara.
It is situated at Omoto Road Greymouth, South Island 7805 New Zealand, located on Omoto Road, 3 miles west of Greymouth on State Highway 6 (Greymouth to Reefton), in the West Coast region of South Island. The Club continues to race each January once per year and has featured Monteiths Brewing Greymouth Cup since 1931 when Black Duke was successful. This race day is part of the well-known four-day West Coast circuit, which ends at Greymouth.
