The Downs at Albuquerque
The Downs at Albuquerque is a horse-racing track in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. It opened in 1938, at the Louisiana Blvd NE.
History of The Downs at Albuquerque
1938 – Racing at the State Fair was inaugurated on April 13, 1938, the oldest race meet in New Mexico. There were no wagering races run at that time at Albuquerque.
1940s – Pari-Mutual was approved around the mid-forties.
1946 – Albuquerque began wagering.
1990s – Racing was in a downturn in New Mexico and across the country. Hence, New Mexico quickly approved racino-style gaming.
1999 – A New casino opened at Albuquerque Downs on August 01, 1999.
2016 – Albuquerque Downs went through a major renovation before the beginning of the 2016 season. The grandstand and Casino were redone. The glass panels that enclosed the grandstand were removed, giving the second and third-story areas open-air seating. The first level was enclosed, and restaurants and bars were added to the Turf and Jockeys Clubs on the third level. Another major difference was the commencement of night racing on June 25, 2016.
