Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park
Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park is a Racino (horse-racing track and casino) in Pompano Beach, Florida, United States. It opened in 1964, at Isle of Capri Circle and closed on 2022.
History of Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park
1926 – Originally, there was already a built racetrack located on the same site in Pompano Park in 1926 with a grandstand that could accommodate 7,000 guests and a mile track composed of clay and sand 100 feet wide. However, pari-mutuel betting was still illegal during those years, so even if the grand opening on Christmas Day of 1926 was a great success, racing events were still put to stop as Governor John Martin nicknamed the Pompano Park “a center of lawbreakers”. Hence, the original race track was utilized for automobile races, polo, and boxing matches. However, did not become prosperous.
1928 – The said track became a Red Cross station when a hurricane ruined South Florida.
1953 – The track became dormant until Fred Van Lennep discovered the old track.
1964 – Pompano Park was built and opened on February 4, 1964. The track is famous as the “Winter Capital of Harness Racing” and the only track with nighttime standardbred harness racing in Florida since its 1964 inaugural season.
1987 – Van Lennep died, so the track management was passed on to the late John A. Cashman, Jr. for the Van Lennep estate.
2022 – It is now owned by Caesars Entertainment but ceased to host live racing. The last harness racing at the track was on April 2022. It became a casino establishment only named Isle Casino Pompano Park.
