Cromwell Racecourse
History
The racecourse is close to the Cromwell junction (Queenstown side) of the Wanaka- Queenstown Highway, 2km from the Cromwell town center, South Island 9310 New Zealand. There is not enough recorded history about the racecourse, but it was told it had a tumultuous history. Then in the 1980s, the Cromwell Jockey Club was closed, which supposedly the racecourse should also. Fortunately, Otago Racing Club and Central Lakes Equestrian Club brought the salvation of the racecourse and was revived. Since then, the racecourse continues having races and arguably unrivaled by any meeting in the South Island, under the management of Otago Racing Club.
Track Details
What makes it unique from most of the racecourse, it has no grandstand with very limited public facilities. Hence, marquees line the length of the finishing straight, facilitating a carnival atmosphere. It also offers quality wine, local music, and arts. There are also activities for entertainment, such as the “run like a woman” race and the free-for-all tug of war contest. The admission fee costs $5 and is free to all Otago and Southland Club members.
