Leicester Racecourse

Leicester Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Oadby, Leicestershire, United Kingdom. It opened in 1603, at Leicester Rd.

History

It was inaugurated on March 23, 1603, the day before Queen Elizabeth I died. Races were discontinued towards the end of the century but were re-introduced in 1720. In the 19th century, some of the UK’s biggest races, including the Prince of Wales Stakes and the Portland Stakes, were held at the track. It is in Oadby, Leicestershire, about three miles south of the city center, owned by Leicester Racecourse Company Ltd.

It is a smart, dual-purpose track known for its chase races, and this course has ten fences, two open ditches, and the regulatory water jump. It hosts 30 race meetings throughout the year, 19 Flat, and 11 National Hunt (The Jumps are split into two major branches – Hurdles and Steeplechases).

In 2014, the entertainment and conferencing venue ‘The Kube’ opened and hosts various events for both business and pleasure. It is like a blank canvas and can be tailored to each client’s requests with a capacity of 1,000 people.

Track Details

It has an oval-shaped course of about 1 mile 5 furlongs, with a straight 7-furlong course joining the round course 4½ furlongs from the winning post. The 7-furlong course runs downhill to halfway, uphill for 2 furlongs before leveling out for the last 1½ furlongs. Races are run over distances between 5 furlongs and 1 mile 3 furlongs 183 yards.

The steeplechase course, which is also about 1 mile 5 furlongs, has ten fences. There are six fences, including the water jump and an open ditch, down the back straight, which runs inside the flat course. Back straight, was moved to the home straight. The home straight now consists of four fences, with the open ditch taken as the third last fence.

The flat course where Hurdle races are run is round and right-handed track about a mile and three-quarters around. The run-in begins downhill then turns into a stiff uphill climb before things level out as horses near the finishing post. The straight course (on which all races from 5-7 furlongs are run) is downhill to halfway, then a steep uphill finish over the final two furlongs. The jumps course, just like the flat, is undulating with a rise towards the finishing post, with ten fences around the track.

Its ‘Punters Café is in the main Grandstand. Several hospitality suites are available, including the Nelson Suite, Club Suite, Executive boxes, Juliet box, and Paddock Pavilion. The parking area is in front of the course, free of charge.
