Catterick Racecourse
History
Catterick Racecourse, sometimes called Catterick Bridge Racecourse, is considered one of the most glamorous fixtures in the north. Racing at the track commenced as early as the mid-17th century, while the first recorded meeting was held on April 22, 1783. However, it was only in 1813 when a permanent course was built. It has both flat and National Hunt events held regularly, which already hosted 17 Flat meetings and 10 National Hunt. It also hosted the Catterick Sunday Market, officially the largest Sunday Market in the entire north of England. The international flat racing champion Collier Hill also won his first race at the track in March 2002.
It is a thoroughbred horse racing venue situated at Catterick Bridge, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. It is one mile northwest of Catterick in North Yorkshire, England, near the hamlet of Catterick Bridge, or five miles south of Scotch Corner. Darlington is the most conveniently situated railway station, approximately 15 miles from the racecourse.
Track Details
The flat course is 1mile 1furlong in length. It is run left-handed has tight bends and undulations. The National Hunt course is a wider and slightly longer circuit. It has eight notoriously easy fences. The course also has an extension for flat sprint races and the ninth fence for some National Hunt races. The gravel subsoil means the going is usually good.
The track has two enclosures, the grandstand & paddock enclosure. This enclosure allows racegoers to access all of the main racecourse facilities, including the Parade Ring, Winners Enclosure, Totesport Betting Shop, and Tote Credit Club, the two-tiered grandstands, or the roof-top terrace above the cafeteria. It is also served by several food and drink outlets, including a three-course meal in the Restaurant, a light meal from the Self-Service Cafeteria, and hot and cold snacks in the Champions Bar & Buffet and the Gods Solution Bar, which also offer full bar facilities along with the Parade Ring and Betting Shop Bars. In addition, it also offers a variety of betting mediums for racegoers, whether to walk through the betting ring, visit the Tote Betting Shop or have a flutter at one of the many Totepool windows. However, picnics are prohibited.
The Course Enclosure is situated in the center of the track that also offers food and drink facilities, including bar facilities and a children’s playground. In every race meeting, there are many on-course bookmakers and Totepool betting facilities available. During the Summer Holidays and on Saturday afternoons, additional attractions are provided to keep younger racegoers entertained throughout the day. The difference between this enclosure and the latter is that racegoers are permitted to bring picnics into this enclosure but are reminded that alcohol is limited to personal consumption only.
To transfer from the Course Enclosure to the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure, visit the Racecard and Transfer Point Hut, where guests can purchase a Grandstand and Paddock Transfer Ticket for £10.00.
