Wincanton Racecourse
Wincanton Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Somerset, England, United Kingdom. It opened in 1867 at Wincanton.
History
Wincanton Races held their first meeting at Hatherleigh on August 1, 1867, when the local community hosted what is widely believed to be the first-ever National Hunt steeplechase.
In 1893, the Wincanton Hunt Steeplechases were formed, and on Easter Bank Holiday, they held the first meeting under what was known as the ‘Grand National Rules’.
In 1913 the Wincanton Race Company was formed, although racing was postponed until after the First World War, resuming on Easter Monday, 1920. After financial difficulties in 1925, the racecourse was moved to its current location at Kingwell Farm, with the inaugural meeting being held at the new course two years later. In 1927, a whole new course was constructed and opened. In 1966, Wincanton Racecourse was sold to the Racecourse Holdings Trust (the second racecourse after Cheltenham that joined the organization), now called Jockey Club Racecourses.
It is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Wincanton, Somerset, England, near the trainer’s yard, Paul Nicholls, and located on the northeast edge of the Blackmore Vale. It is also approximately 12 miles northwest of Yeovil and 10 miles northeast of Shaftesbury. The location is also just off the A303, the arterial route between London and the Southwest.
The racecourse is rated the 2015 Racegoers Club Best Small Racecourse in the Southwest and Wales category. It hosts 17 quality jump racing fixtures from October through to May, including several special events. It is also home of the Badger Ale’s Handicap Chase, The Betway Kingwell Hurdle, and best known for its Boxing Day meeting. One of the sharpest courses in the UK and is described as a sharp test and a fair jumping track that provides good quality racing.
Track Details
Wincanton has a right-handed, flat, and essentially sharp track. It only hosts National Hunt race meetings. Flat throughout, there are no rises or falls on the track, which measures around 1m3f in circumference. The course is broadly rectangular, so its bends are a lot less gentle than most others in the country. When combined with ground firmer than good, this makes Wincanton one of the sharpest racecourses around and one of the speediest despite those sharp turns. The steeplechase fences are large, making it a good test of a chaser. Three fences in quick succession in the second half of the home-straight.
It offers three enclosures as well. First is the Premier Enclosure that allows racegoers full access to all public areas of the racecourse, a choice of three public bars, and two of these include a food service area. It has two restaurants that provide a venue for a whole day out with food and service and a place to retreat from the crowd. The main stand has covered seating, and racegoers can also upgrade to the Premier Viewing Area, an enclosed, glass-fronted stand overlooking the winning post. Second is the Grandstand Enclosure that gives access to a viewing grandstand with a view over the last fence. It has a choice of two bars, two food outlets, and numerous mobile units selling burgers and chips, etc. This enclosure features the main betting ring that buzzes anticipation before each race. The third one is the Course Enclosure available during Boxing Day Only. It has a grandstand overlooking the third last fence and has a bar and food outlet. This enclosure is the only one where dogs are allowed (must be on a lead), and guests can bring their food and drink. Premier and Grandstand ticket holders have access to the Course Enclosure.
