Bangor-On-Dee Racecourse

Bangor-On-Dee Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Bangor-on-Dee near Wrexham, United Kingdom. It opened in February 25, 1859 at Althrey Ct.

History

The track was founded on February 25, 1859, located at the Althrey Ct, in close proximity to the English counties of Cheshire and Shropshire and southwest of the Bangor-on-Dee village of Wrexham County Borough in northeast Wales, approximately 6 miles southeast of Wrexham itself. It is managed and owned by the Chester Race Company Ltd. It is a left-handed National Hunt racecourse and the only track in the country without a grandstand. However, the racecourse is located in a natural amphitheater, bordered on one side by the historic boundary of the River Dee, while the rest of the course is encircled by a series of slightly sloping hills and mounds that could provide natural grandstand viewing of the course from almost every aspect.

It was awarded the Gold Standard Award by the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA), hosted amateur Point-to-Point races run by local hunts since 2006, and all former Tote betting positions were replaced by the racecourse’s own in-house bangorBET betting system in May 2012. Now, the track hosts 16 National Hunt fixtures throughout the year.

Track Details

The track is approximately one and a half miles in circumference with a run-in of approximately one furlong. It combines three long sections with two shorter sections, making it a cross between a triangle and a pentangle. The course is left-handed, sharp, and mainly flat. The Hurdles Course has six flights per circuit, with the final two being in the home straight. It also features bends such as a tight paddock bend and nine fences per circuit. It also offers a choice of two enclosures, the Paddock Enclosure, and the Course Enclosure. Admission fees are £19 for the Paddock Enclosure and £9 for the Course Enclosure, although admission is free for accompanied children in both cases. Private facilities are located in the Paddock Enclosure, and the largest is known as Marquee, with a capacity of 500 people. Other facility includes the Dee Suite that can accommodate 75 people, and the Chalets, adjacent to the Parade Ring, which can accommodate up to 50 people. All these facilities also feature private dining and private viewing, with all elements of the Paddock Enclosure within easy reach. The track also offers a wheelchair viewing stand on one of the main hills.
