Gawler Racecourse

Gawler Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Barnet Rd, Evanston, Gawler, South Australia.

History

It is situated just 40 minutes north of Adelaide, on the main road into the town of Gawler, on the edge of the famous Barossa Valley wine area, and a 37km drive north of Adelaide operated by the Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club with its dedicated railway station. It is also a well-known function center, hosting 14-midweek meetings yearly and 2 Sunday meetings, one being the Gawler Cup.

In 1856, they were known as Gawler Town Races, and the program was extended to 3 days in March. Although the Jockey Club had been operational since 1874, an administration meeting on January 23, 1879, formalized the Club and organized a meeting on April 15, 1879. The current Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club were founded on March 12, 1891.

Track Details

The Gawler Racecourse is 1840 m in circumference and has a 300m long straight. A few curves and a rather long final turn can give inside barriers an advantage over distances of 1700m and less. It also has sand and grass training tracks inside with a 300m front (final) straight and a shorter back straight connected by a long final corner, with a tight corner linking the front straight to an angled straight, then a flat corner into the back.
